Punch cards were long the norm in programming computers, well into the 20th century, when computers were beginning to be used by governments and even schools and businesses. They were a form of hardware that was used, along with mechanical relays and vacuum tubes. However, they were incredibly inefficient. The largest programming endeavor undertaken was a project called SAGE, and it was conducted by the United States Air Force in the 1950s. It used 62,500 punch cards to store all of 5 megabytes of data. Today, in the era of personal computers that can hold a terabyte or more of data, that number is almost laughable.
